Make your own cookbook

The cost, the timing, and the four ways to do it.

A cookbook is three jobs: gathering the recipes, laying out the pages, and printing a book that survives a kitchen. Here is what each takes, and what it costs.

The book

One book, in one of three looks

The template sets the type, the grid, the page numbers and the cover, so you never design a page. Each is a complete book, not a skin.

The price

What it costs

Building the book is free; you pay when you print. The first 20 pages are included in the $39. Each page after that is $0.50 at the standard rate, and a Pro membership lowers it.

A page is one side of a sheet. Shipping depends on where the book is going and is quoted at checkout.

The options

Four ways to make a cookbook

A document editor, then a print shop

Free to start and fully under your control. You set the grid, the ingredient columns, the page numbers and the contents page by hand, and a print shop needs a file with the right margins and bleed. For eighty recipes, that is a great deal of layout.

A photo-book service

Easy and familiar, designed around pictures. Some offer cookbook themes with places for ingredients and steps, but you still build the book page by page in a general photo-book editor. How that compares.

A general book maker

Full control and high print quality, from a blank page: you design every page. How that compares.

A cookbook maker — Mise

The recipes go in, from photos, links or pasted text, and the template sets the pages. A narrower choice of looks, and a finished book at the end of it.

The preparation

Before you start

The recipes

Photos of cards, links, or text you paste. Mise reads each into a recipe you check against the original. It never adds an ingredient or a step.

Other people's recipes

Send relatives an invite link. Each types a recipe on their phone and sees what the page will look like, with no account to make first.

A title, and a dedication

The title goes on the cover and the spine. A dedication page is optional.

Questions

How much does it cost to make a cookbook?

A Mise hardcover starts at $39 with the first 20 pages included, then $0.50 a page at the standard rate: $69 at 80 pages, $93 at 128. Shipping is quoted at checkout. Building the book is free; you pay when you print.

Can I put other people’s recipes in it?

Yes. Send an invite link and each relative types a recipe on their phone and sees how it will look in the book. They do not need an account to start.

Do I need design skills?

No. You choose one of three templates and the layout is handled for you, including page numbers, a table of contents and the cover.

How many copies can I order?

As many as you like. Each is printed on demand, so one copy is fine.

Where does it ship, and how long does it take?

Books are printed in the US and ship to the US and Canada. Standard delivery is 9–10 business days, door to door.
